About APT

What is APT Treatment?

Adolescent and Parent Treatment (APT) is a structured, manualised treatment specifically developed for adolescents aged 12 to 24 with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Atypical Anorexia Nervosa (AAN). APT offers a comprehensive and holistic approach, addressing many of the limitations found in traditional adolescent eating disorder treatments.

At the core of APT is the belief that both physical and psychological recovery are essential for true and lasting freedom from anorexia. Weight restoration alone is viewed as necessary but insufficient without concurrent psychological healing.

APT supports adolescents in developing insight into the personality traits and temperamental factors that may have contributed to the onset and maintenance of the eating disorder. Adolescents are then guided in learning how to reframe and use these traits as personal strengths. The model also addresses underlying emotional issues and supports the management of co-occurring mental health conditions, such as anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and depression.
